Driven by the urgency of the climate crisis, the IMACC is a pioneering initiative led by us to mobilise the Indian museum community. Through this initiative, we hope to create impactful, sustainable change, building a network of committed partners dedicated to integrating climate-conscious practices into museum operations.
IMACC serves as the India hub for Culture Declares Emergency, a global movement advocating for sustainability through arts and culture. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11, 12, and 13, advancing efforts towards sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and climate action.
Since 2022, the IMACC initiative has partnered with 10 museums, steering them toward more sustainable practices.
Raising Awareness: Helping museums in engaging their audiences in conversations around environmental sustainability by hosting events and exhibitions focused on the topic, and interpreting collections through an ecological lens.
Facilitating Knowledge Sharing: Organising workshops and quarterly online meetings that promote collaboration, spark new ideas, facilitate the exchange of insights and learning from the industry experts. These sessions inspire museums to launch climate-focused initiatives and share lessons learned.
Building Actionable Resources: Creating resources like the Sustainability Handbook, curated vendor lists for sustainable alternatives, and waste audit sheets to galvanise organisations into action. These practical tools enable them to take measurable steps toward shared goals.
Looking ahead, IMACC continues to encourage museums to deepen their sustainability efforts, knowing they can become key spaces for environmental dialogue while preserving cultural heritage. It’s a shared journey that emphasises collaboration, practical solutions, and a long-term vision for positive change.
In a pioneering move towards cultural stewardship, the Sustainable Practices Handbook: Transforming Museums in India, created by ReReeti in collaboration with Urban Morph, serves as the country’s first comprehensive resource for sustainable museum operations. This crucial guide fills a significant gap in the availability of sustainability resources for cultural organisations in India.
Promoting eco-consciousness, ethical procurement, and carbon neutrality, the handbook offers a holistic approach to sustainability. It provides actionable strategies for addressing key areas such as vendor practices, carbon emissions reduction, waste management, and energy efficiency, empowering museums to become leaders in environmental and social responsibility.
More than a resource, the handbook is a call to action, providing cultural organisations with a practical roadmap to drive change and create a lasting impact for generations to come.
The IMACC capacity-building workshops, tailored to partner museums' needs, bring together industry experts and museum professionals to collaboratively explore actionable strategies for integrating sustainability into museum operations, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
